He said at present India does not produce a range of electronic products nor is there a semiconductor ecosystem to move away from China.
"We do get parts and components from Korea, Japan and Europe but at a higher price tag. On the other hand, the scale of variety that is available in China is nowhere else, apart from being cost competitive," Bhargava pointed out.
Also, a host of multinational companies, with their latest technologies and know-how, have set up their industries in China and export goods and products from that country, he said, adding that these are made in China but not Chinese per se.
"The real issue is manufacturing products and goods, be it vehicles, electronic components and semiconductors etc at competitive price and not higher at, say 30 per cent, 40 per cent or 50 per cent…," Bhargava said.
But India has not built up and is therefore lagging behind, depending on other countries, he said.
"We continue to import products and goods because there is little choice in the matter due to their non-availability in India, or because of quality and pricing issues," the chairman, who has steered the automaker successfully over the years, grabbing over 50 per cent market share, a feat nowhere seen globally.
