‘China firms have contributed to PM-Cares Fund’

Modi has soft corner for China: Cong

- AGE CORRESPONDENT

The Congress on Sunday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of “misleading the nation” by claiming that China did not intrude into Indian territory.

Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said: “Modi unashamedly misleads the nation and serves the sinister agenda of the Chinese by claiming that China has never intruded into the Indian territory, nor is it in occupation of any territory. This is the greatest disservice to the nation.”

He further added that the Prime Minister of India has a special soft spot for China. Even as chief minister of Gujarat, the country saw his close association in his four visits to China. He is the only Prime Minister who has visited China five times.

Reacting sharply, the Congress went ahead to raise questions over the alleged donations to the PM-Cares Fund, established recently by the Prime Minister to mobilise relief money to deal with crises such as the coronavirus pandemic. Dr. Singhvi said: “`7 crore in this fund has been received from Huawei. Everyone knows Huawei is the alter ego of People’s Liberation Army (PLA) hence the Chinese government. `30 crore has come from Chinese company Tiktok. Paytm with 38% Chinese controlled shareholding has donated.”

The Congress has been demanding that the donor list of the PMCares Fund should be made public. Dr. Singhvi said that reports suggest that as on May 20, the fund received `9,678 crore.

“The shocking part is that though Chinese forces have transgressed into our territory, the Prime Minister has received money in the fund from Chinese companies,” he alleged.

“No one knows the constitutional or operational framework of the PM-Cares Fund and how it is controlled or money given to it utilised. The fund is not even subject to audit by any public authority including CAG. PMO has gone to the extent of saying this fund is not a public authority” he further added.

Dr. Singhvi asserted that if the Prime Minister of India will compromise his position by accepting donations of hundreds of crores from Chinese companies in the controversial and opaque fund, then how will he defend the country against Chinese aggression.
