Arms, explosives seized in Assam ahead of I-Day
■ ‘Sophisticated weapons belonged to NDFB’
In what Assam police claimed its pursuit to make Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) area free from illegal arms, security forces on Friday, a day before Independence day, recovered huge cache of arms and ammunitions from Udalguri district of Bodoland Territorial council.
Informing that the operation was conducted jointly by Udalguri and Guwahati police, security sources said that the cache of sophisticated weapons belonged to NDFB.
Guwahati Police Commissioner Munna Prashad Gupta, who is also the ADGP of the Special Branch of Assam Police, told reporters that based on source information, Guwahati Police conducted a search operation along with Udalguri Police at several places in Udalguri district and recovered the arms, ammunition and explosives on Thursday night
The arms were recovered from multiple locations of Udalguri district where the police found them kept hidden underground. However, no arrests have been made so far in this connection and investigation is on.
Earlier, police had also recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition in Kokrajhar, Baksa and Chirang district. All these weapons belong to various faction of NDFB which recently surrendered in mass, security sources said, adding that NDFB factions were suspected to have not surrendered their entire inventory.
Meanwhile, Assam is already on alert ahead of Independence Day. Several militant outfits of the region have given a call to boycott the Independence Day celebrations. The intelligence agencies have warned that these outfits may try to carry out subversive activities to make their presence felt. The Army, Police and the paramilitary forces are intensifying their operations and carrying out frisking and checking.
