- BIPIN DANI

The 29-year-old all-rounder cricketer Vijay Shankar recently got engaged to Vaishali Visweswaran, who is a part time teacher in Chennai. Vijay, who plays for Sunrisers Hyderabad, becomes the second Indian cricketer to have gotten engaged this month. He follows Yuzvendra Chahal, who had got engaged to Dhanshree Verma, who is a dentist and dancer and choreographer.

Speaking to this correspondent exclusively over the telephone from Chennai, Vijay’s father, H. Shankar first clarifies to us that the betrothal was an arranged one between the two families. “It is not a love affair. My son still wants to play and concentrate on cricket. In fact, he was not even aware about the fact that we were trying to find a girl for him,” he says. “But when the families matched the horoscopes of both Vijay and Vaishali, we found out that she is the best match for my son.”

Vijay Senior also added that the ring ceremony, held at Sri Mahal Hall — a venue pretty close to Vijay’s home — had only about forty people from both families were present, keeping in mind all the governmental and municipal restrictions and guidelines related to COVID-19.

However, no players from the Indian team were invited to the ceremony. “Vijay’s coach, S. Balaji, and his two local cricketer-friends were present,” adds his dad.

The families have not decided the date of marriage yet. On Friday noon, Vijay Shankar arrived in Mumbai to leave for UAE on 23rd August for the IPL.
