City BJP chief faces criticism from party over letter to Anna

- SHASHI BHUSHAN

Within a fortnight of facing criticism over joining of 50 anti-CAA Shaheen Bagh protesters in BJP, party’s local unit president Adesh Gupta is now facing criticism within the party over his letter to social activist Anna Hazare seeking support for launching a movement against corruption in the national capital.

Mr Gupta invited Mr Hazare to join the movement against the AAP government. A group of party leaders feel that invitation to Mr Hazare raises serious questions over the BJP leadership in the city.

Questioning the letter seeking support of Mr Hazare against the AAP government, a senior party leader said that this shows the preparedness of the Delhi BJP leadership to fight the AAP.

“The party, which also used to boost its cadres, has surrendered in front of the Kejriwal government in absence of strategy and now sought support of Mr Hazare for its ‘public movement.’ Will Mr Gupta explain to the workers about the public movement started by Delhi BJP under his leadership during his tenure since June first week?”

Number of senior leaders termed the ‘letter bomb’ an act of betrayal to the party workers.

“Asking Mr Hazare to

lead a movement shows the bankruptcy of the leadership and doing so they also betrayed lakhs of BJP workers who are fighting tooth and nail against AAP,” they added.

Some Delhi BJP leaders also questioned Mr Gupta’s choice to lead the movement saying how could Mr Gupta ask Mr Hazare to lead a movement who criticised PM Modi.

In February 2019, Mr Hazare had said that the government led by Mr Modi “is only misleading the people of the country and leading the country to autocracy.” Reacting angrily to the letter, some leaders said that it shows that Mr Gupta has no faith in the leadership of PM Modi, Union home minister Amit Shah, party president J.P. Nadda, and other senior leaders.

“Why do we need Mr Hazare to start a movement against the Kejriwal government when we have leaders like Mr Modi, Mr Shah, and Mr Nadda?” they asked.

Delhi BJP media department head Ashok Goel did not respond to calls to get his reaction.
