Delhi records less than 4K daily Covid cases after 5 days

The national capita’’ s Covid case count went past 2.46 lakh on Sunday with 3,812 more people contractin­g the viral disease, while 37 fresh fatalities pushed the death toll to 4,982, according to the Delhi government’’ s health bulletin.

Before this, the city recorded over 4,000 cases for five consecutiv­e days.

The capital recorded 4,071 cases on Saturday, 4,127 on Friday, 4,432 on Thursday, 4,473 on Wednesday and 4,263 on Tuesday.

The number of deaths from Covid recorded daily in the national capital has hovered in the range of 3040 from September 15- 19, during which daily fresh cases were logged in excess of 4,000 on all five days. In this five- day period, however, the number of tests conducted every day

have seen record numbers, ranging between 60,000 and over 62,000.

Covid cases have shown a surge since the beginning of this month with September 16 recording 4,473 cases, the highest single- day spike here till date. On that day, 33 fatalities were recorded, taking the total number of deaths

to 4839, according to official figures shared by the Delhi health department.

Of the total 2,46,711 cases reported in Delhi so far, 2,09,632 have either recovered, been discharged or migrated out of the city, the bulletin said.

As many as 52,405 tests were conducted on Saturday to detect COVID19 infection, of which 11,322 were RTPCR/ CBNAAT/ TrueNa t tests and 41,083 rapid antigen tests, it said.

Authoritie­s conducted 61,973 tests on Friday, 61,037 on Thursday, 60,014 on Wednesday, 62,593 on Tuesday and a record 62,669 tests on Monday.

Health authoritie­s have conducted around 5.92 lakh tests in the last 10 days — an average of more than 59,000 tests a day, according to government data.

The number of total tests conducted was 19,62,120 on September 10. It rose to 25,55,007 on Sunday.

Health minister Satyendar Jain also took a meeting of medical directors of the Delhi government­run hospitals to review the status of testing. The death rate for the last 10 days stood at 0.77 per cent. The case positivity rate during the last 24 hours was 7.27 per cent while the cumulative positivity rate is 9.66 per cent, the bulletin said.

The number of active cases increased by over 190 per cent in the city since mid- August. There were 11,068 active Covid cases on August 18 which increased to 32,097 on Sunday.

Of the total 15,621 hospital beds for COVID- 19 patients, 7,040 are occupied and around 19,000 patients are under home isolation, according to government data.

There has been an over 235 per cent increase in the number of containmen­t zones in the city in a month — from 557 on August 18 to 1,872 on Sunday. Government officials and experts have been cautioning to people to wear masks, observe social distancing and venture out only when urgently required to help contain the spread of the infection.
