Stomaching it
Dr. Sarita Jaiswal, Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist talks of ways gastric trouble may manifest after delivery and how to deal with them:
CONSTIPATION:
● This is most commonly problem after childbirth. This can be due to:
● Slowing down of gastrointestinal system due to drastic hormonal changes.
● Medication used for postpartum pain relief
IRON SUPPLEMENTS
● Pain due to birth injuries, stitches and haemorrhoids.
● Also, many women fear that act of pushing will result in tearing of stitches and have difficulty in relaxing the anal sphincter.
TO PREVENT THIS PROBLEM:
● Drink at least 3 litres of fluids to ensure healthy stool consistency. Breast feeding mothers who lose fluids due to milk production are more prone to dehydration.
● Have a well-balanced high-fibre diet.
● Avoid straining during bowel movements, as this can lead to haemorrhoids.
● Regular exercise improves circulation and gets bowels moving. Walking around the house is an option where exercising isn’t possible.
● If required, mild laxatives can be used.
FLATULENCE:
This may take the form of belching, sharp abdominal pain or abdominal cramps. The problem may be resolved naturally or may require treatment.
TO PREVENT THIS PROBLEM:
Warm drinks can elevate the cramps. Pelvic floor exercises to strengthen the muscles are also helpful.
STRESS:
This is often an overlooked cause of digestive problems. Stress can activate a hormonal response that can slow the digestive system. The postpartum period can be stressful for a new mother as she heals from childbirth and adjusts to life taking care of the new-born. While a certain amount of stress is normal, taking steps to reduce it is important for both mental and digestive health.
