US chip makers lobby for local mfg

- IAN KING FEB. 11

The chief executive officers of chip companies including Intel Corp, Qualcomm Inc and Advanced Micro Devices Inc urged US President Joe Biden to support domestic production and stop the country from losing its edge in innovation.

The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) sent a letter on Thursday to Biden to include "substantial funding for incentives for semiconductor manufacturing, in the form of grants and/or tax credits" in his administration's stimulus package.

The letter, signed by Bob Swan of Intel, Steve

Mollenkopf of Qualcomm, Lisa Su of AMD and other members of the SIA board, highlighted that the country's share of chip manufacturing has dropped to 12 per cent from 37 per cent in 1990."Our technology leadership is at risk in the race for pre-eminence in the technologies of the future, including artificial intelligence, 5G/6G, and quantum computing," the letter said.

US companies mostly outsource production to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co and South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. That's becoming a national security issue as tensions rise between the US and China, which is investing heavily to expand its own chip industry.

The SIA argues that government incentives in other countries have unfairly disadvantaged US chip manufacturing. The US has historically shied away from tax breaks and other major government support for the industry, but some politicians have become concerned about the loss of these technical skills.

Support by the Biden administration may even help TSMC and Samsung to go ahead with plans to build plants nearer their customers in the US. TSMC has announced an initial agreement to locate a new chip facility in Arizona. Samsung is considering various sites in the US.

London, Feb. 11: Everton upped the pressure on Jose Mourinho with a thrilling 5-4 victory over Tottenham after extratime to reach the FA Cup quarterfinals, as Manchester City eased into the last eight by beating Swansea 3-1 on Wednesday.

Mourinho’s men made a bright start at Goodison Park as Davinson Sanchez headed them into the lead after just three minutes.

However, the defensive errors that have cost Tottenham dear in recent months were in evidence as Everton struck three times in seven minutes just before half-time through Dominic CalvertLewin, Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson’s penalty.

Erik Lamela reduced Spurs’ deficit in first-half stoppage time before another rare goal for Sanchez made it 3-3.

Richarlison then smashed home from a narrow angle to restore Everton’s lead.

Harry Kane came all guns blazing to Tottehham’s rescue with 83rd minute goal which was further cancelled by Everton’s Bernard in 97th minute which earned them a super victory.

Meanwhile, the defending from both sides will encourage City, who also face Everton in the Premier League next Wednesday, after they broke the English football record for consecutive wins by a top-flight club.

Kyle Walker, Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus were on target for City, who extended their winning run in all competitions to 15 games with a 31 success over Swansea.

Victory was also Pep Guardiola’s 200th in 268 games as City boss, with his side still on course for a historic quadruple of trophies. —
