After taking a tough stand against microblogging site Twitter, Government has decided to further strengthen the Cyber Crime Unit of Intelligence Bureau to closely monitor antiIndia propaganda on social media platforms. Sources said an immediate allocation of Rs 100 crore and an additional staff of 50 cyber experts have been sanctioned for IB’s Cyber Unit.

Following an intense farmers agitation, cyber experts in the IB have been closely monitoring activity on the social media as it is suspected subversive elements based abroad are trying to take advantage of the current situation by reading false propaganda against the Government.

A list of almost 400 twitter handles being operated from Pakistan and its intelligence agencies to foment trouble during farmers agitation were identified and shared with Delhi Police following which necessary corrective action was taken by security agencies.

In addition, Centre has also asked Twitter to suspend almost 1500 accounts but the microblogging site has so far refused to do say most of these accounts did not violate their norms and had suspended about 248 due to security reasons.

But intelligence sources claim that the farmers agitation has been an eye opener for them in terms of how social media was being used to spread propaganda against the Government. Sources said a lot of anti-government activity was noticed on the social media platforms when farmers agitation gained momentum.
