- RAJIB CHOWDHURI

In what appears to be yet another masterstroke by her to outclass the BJP with sops for the voters in pollbound West Bengal, chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday launched a scheme: Maa Kitchen offering daily meal at `5 to the poor. The menu includes rice, daal, vegetables and egg (one piece) curry in a plate available on a first come first serve basis in between 1-3 pm during lunchtime.

Kickstarting the project from Nabanna, Ms Banerjee informed that her government would bear a subsidy of Rs 15 per plate in the initiative which would be run by the self help groups and would expand across the state. Two outlets have been started in South Kolkata.

"It is a unique idea which was announced in the state budget. I will go to taste the food one day. This programme is aimed for the common people. It will create a business set-up," Ms Banerjee said about the concept which is the brainchild of election strategist of the ruling Trinamul Congress: Prashant Kishor.
