Modi, Uddhav express grief, announce `2L relief each to next of kin

Sixteen labourers, including six women and two children, were killed after a truck overturned in Maharashtr­a’s Jalgaon district on Monday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the loss of lives while announcing an ex-gratia of `2 lakhs each to the next of kin of the deceased.

According to police, all the deceased were labourers from Abhoda, Kerhala and Raver in the Jalgaon.

Maharashtr­a chief minister Uddhav Thackeray offered his condolence­s terming the accident as “unfortunat­e”. He announced an aid of `2 lakh each to next to kin of the deceased from the chief minister’s relief fund. The cost of treatment of injured people will also be borne by the state government, said the chief minister’s office.

Mr Modi expressed grief at the loss of lives in a road accident and conveyed his condolence­s to the bereaved families. “Heart-wrenching truck accident in Jalgaon, Maharashtr­a. Condole-nces to the bereaved families. May the injured recover at the earliest,” he said in a tweet posted by his office.

The Prime Minister’s Office informed that Mr Modi has approved an exgratia of `2 lakh each to the bereaved families, while the seriously injured will get `50,000 from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF), which is utilised to render immediate relief to families of those killed in natural calamities like floods, cyclones and earthquake­s.

President Ramnath Kovind tweeted, “Deeply distressed to learn that a truck carrying labourers, women and children overturned near Jalgaon in Maharashtr­a resulting in deaths of many. My thoughts and prayers are with their families and wish an early recovery for the injured.”
