- RAJIB CHOWDHURI

A DYFI worker Moidul Islam Middya (31), who was critically wounded allegedly in the police lathicharge during last week’s Nabanna rally of the Left parties’ youth wings demanding jobs, succumbed to injuries at a private nursing home, prompting the CPI(M), it’s ally Congress and the BJP in the Opposition to accuse the Mamata Banerjee government of his “murder.”

The auto-rickshaw driver from Kotolpur in Bankura was the breadwinner of his family.

On February 11 he participated in the DYFI-SFI march which turned violent as the rallyists and police clashed with each other. With deep injuries Moidul was rescued from Esplanade. He was rushed to a clinic from where he was later shifted to a private nursing home run by CPI(M) leader and doctor Fuad Halim.

Dr Halim said, “On February 13 morning, Moidul was admitted after his medical tests showed development of an acute kidney failure. It happens only when muscles get hit continuously to become wounded and it’s internal protein comes out and blocks the kidney through blood. He had massive muscle injuries from the lathicharge by the police.”

CPI(M) MLA Sujan Chakraborty claimed, “A bright youth was murdered and turned into a corpse.”

Leader of the Opposition Abdul Mannan alleged, “It is a brutal murder which reflects unlimited atrocities of an autocratic government.”

State BJP president Dilip Ghosh said, “This is unfortunate. Trinamul Congress government has lost its control over everything.”

Wondering if Mr Chakraborty talked of getting her call about the DYFI worker’s death first, the chief minister however said, “Any death is sad and unfortunate. Post mortem report will reveal the cause of death. But the police was neither informed nor complained about it. Family of the deceased was not informed also though the

youth was admitted to a hospital two days ago. He might have had a kidney or any other ailment before his death.”

“Any hospital is mandated to share information with the local police station in such cases. But it was not done. I told Mr Chakraborty that I am ready to provide a job and financial assistance to the family of the deceased,” she added. Post-mortem report, however, indicated of assault only on the legs of the deceased, according to the police.

Agitated over his death, some DYFI cadres heckled a cop and torn apart his uniform during a protest in the city.
