Stars drop the pretence

Many celebs go off social media, expressing empathy with those caught in the grip of the pandemic

Hey guys, thank you so much for all the love and warmth on my birthday. My heart is full. In other news, this is going to be my last post on social media. Considering that I am so active anyway, I have decided to drop the pretence. We will continue to communicate as we did before

There’s an exodus from social media again. Aamir Khan seems to have played Pied Piper. A host of celebrities, from Amit Sadh and Fatima Sana Shaikh, to Warina Hussain and Hina Khan, have followed him, citing the COVID-19 crisis in the country.

Amit Sadh expressed himself eloquently when he wrote, “The recent events have made me reflect on whether I should be posting my pictures and reels. Especially when my city Mumbai and the entire state is under strict COVID restrictions, the whole country is going through a difficult time. I believe my posts and reels of the gym sessions, the silly things that I do will not heal or entertain anyone. This is not a criticism to anyone. I personally feel the best way to be sensitive about the situation is to pray and hope for things to get better.”

“There is not much a celeb can tweet about. It is not really advisable to tweet about upcoming projects or trending trailers and posters. So it is best that they keep off social media if they cannot post anything worthwhile,” feels senior PR official Hemanshu Mistry. “There are those who are only using their handles to provide help to people like arranging hospital beds, oxygen cylinders or vaccinations amidst the crisis,” he points out.

Esha Gupta has joined the list of those exiting social media. “Seeing the situation in our country, my family and I have contributed beds and essentials. Every day seeing what our country is going through is just painful. Going off social media, but please continue sharing verified information so my team can share it with all of you,” she said.

Earlier, Love Yatri actress Warina Hussain had said, “I remember reading somewhere that you don’t have to announce your departure because this isn’t an airport. But I’ll do so for my friends and fans, whose love has always been my strength. This is my last social media post, but my team will continue to manage my account so you can stay up to date on my work.” “In Aamir sir’s language dropping the pretence,” she captioned the post.

It may be recalled that Aamir quit social media because he wanted to “drop the pretence”. “Hey guys, thank you so much for all the love and warmth on my birthday. My heart is full. In other news, this is going to be my last post on social media. Considering that I am so active anyway, I have decided to drop the pretence. We will continue to communicate as we did before,” he had said.

Aamir’s Dangal costar followed suit earlier this week

“Taking a break from social media. Stay safe guys,” she wrote.

It really feels like a very big personal loss. She was someone who lived a very fulfilling life. She made her own rules, paved her own path
