A video released by the BJP on its social media platform of its members who were “victims of the post-poll violence” in West Bengal had to be pulled back as a photograph of one of the victims — Manik Moitro from Sitalkuchi — turned out to be that of a journalist.

The BJP had earlier shared the names of nine victims of post-poll violence in West Bengal, including Monik Moitro.

Attacking the TMC, BJP shared the 5.28-minute video on all its social media handles on Wednesday. Before it was taken down, the video had garnered over 12,000 views on the main @BJP4India Twitter handle.

The party had to pull back the video after the journalist tweeted that he was “living and hale and hearty and around 1,300 km away from Sitalkuchi.”

Also, Union minister V. Merleedharan’s convoy came under attack in West Midnapore with the minister claiming that the attack was orchestrated by “TMC goons.”

“The image of Mr Abhro Banerjee was erroneously included in the video while using an article by him as a source for the content,” said a statement issued by the BJP, which also included a hyperlink and an image link in its statement claiming that Manik Maitro “succumbed to his injuries in Sitalkutchi following violence instigated and inflicted by TMC members…”

Mr Muraleedharan, who was in the state to take stock of the post-poll violence, posted a video on his social media when his vehicle was allegedly attacked by locals in Panchkhudi area of West Midnapore district. Some people could be seen throwing sticks and stones. However, the TMC claimed that it was a “spontaneous protest” by the people against the BJP.

“This cannot be the culture of Bengal. Women are being attacked. This is nothing but goondagardi. Even today my vehicle was targeted. I will give a report to the Centre in this regard,” the minister told the media later.
