India recorded 4,03,738 fresh cases on Sunday. This was the fifth straight day of 4-lakhplus daily infections in the country.

However, the numbers have declined marginally over the past three days after hitting a peak of 4,14,554 on Thursday. Deaths continued to surge with 4,092 fatalities reported on Sunday. However, there were early signs in the data that the second wave in the country could be reaching its peak. Several states too imposed lockdown or strict curbs as the Covid catastroph­e continues.

Maharashtr­a reported 56,578 cases while Karnataka had 47,563. Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh were the other top contributo­rs. Rajsthan recorded 159 deaths and 17,921 coronaviru­s cases on Sunday, taking the death toll to 5,665 and the infection tally to 7,56,707.

Haryana reported 13,548 new coronaviru­s cases, taking the case tally to 6,15,897 while 12,639 recoveries brought the active number of cases in the state to 1,16,867. Haryana recorded 151 Covid-19 deaths in the last 24 hours, according to the health bulletin.

In UP the number of new cases of Covid-19 continued to decline while recoveries went up in the state on Saturday, health officials said. At least 26,847 fresh cases were reported while 34,721 people were declared free of coronaviru­s infection in the last 24 hours. During this period, total 2,23,656 Covid tests were conducted in the state.

In a first of its kind data released by the government, on Covid patients requiring critical care, shows that nearly 50,000 people are currently in ICUs, while over 14,000 on ventilator support.

Meanwhile, the Centre issued advisory on management of Mucorm-ycosis fungal infection in Covid-19 patients

Mucormycos­is, a fungal infection being found in Covid-19 patients with uncontroll­ed diabetes and prolonged intensive care unit (ICU) stay, may turn fatal if uncared.

Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana extended their ongoing lockdowns till May 17 to curb the unpreceden­ted surge of Covid-19 cases and deaths.

Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan and Puducherry will also have a two-week shutdown starting Monday, while in Karnataka’s stringent lockdown will come into effect on Monday till May 24. On Saturday, Kerala came under a nine-day complete lockdown.
