Heaving a sigh of relief, the national capital, on Thursday, logged 10,489 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, leading to the decrease in the demand of oxygen supply in the city.

Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, on Thursday, said the city’s requirement of oxygen has gone down from 700 metric tonnes to 582 metric tonnes per day and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has written to the Centre asking it to give the surplus quota to other states.

“We have written a letter to the Central government and have said our work will be done with 582 metric tonnes of oxygen per day and they can give the surplus oxygen from Delhi’s quota to other states. As of Thursday, the positivity rate has come down to 14 per cent and around 10,400 new Covid19 cases were reported.

“Now that the number of cases is reducing, we are seeing a decrease in the demand for beds and medical oxygen. When daily cases were peaking around 15 days ago, our calculations, factoring in bed occupancy and active cases, showed Delhi required 700 MT of oxygen. But now, after assessment of the Covid-19 situation, Delhi’s oxygen need has been revised to 582 MT per day. As a responsible government, we will give the surplus oxygen to the states that need it,” Mr Sisodia said in a press briefing on Thursday.

He also thanked the Centre and Delhi high court for coming to the aid of the people of Delhi while they were in distress due to the surge in the number of Covid-19 cases in the deadly second wave of the pandemic.
