Plantation drive of medicinal plants launched in city

The Delhi government has launched a mega plantation drive of medicinal plants to mark the World Environmen­t Day, environmen­t minister Gopal Rai said on Saturday.

The minister said that the Delhi government has 14 nurseries across the city and from Monday any person can visit these nurseries and can get medicinal plants for free.

“The medicinal plants whic are available with the Delhi government nurseries are Amla, Amrud, Arjun, Jamun, Neem, Tulsi and others. We have 14 nurseries across the national capital and for the ease of the citizens of Delhi, we have also appointed one coordinato­r for each of these

nurseries. We are sharing the phone numbers of these coordinato­rs and I appeal to people to contact them before going to the nurseries. Any person can order the plants from these coordinato­rs and

collect,’’ the minister said.

The government will also celebrate ‘Van Mahotsav’ from 26 June to 11 July as part of a mega drive under which 33 lakh saplings will be planted across the city, the minister said.

According to the minister, all the cabinet ministers of Delhi, Speaker of the Delhi legislativ­e assembly, MLAs, NGOs and RWA ‘s will be taking part in this drive which will be handled by different department­s and agencies including the environmen­t department, DDA, MCD, PWD, BSES etc.

On 9 June a virtual meeting with all these agencies will be held and the entire plan will be finalised,” the minister further added.

“In order to combat the air pollution, the Delhi government has taken several steps such as bringing the tree transplant­ation policy, anti-dust pollution campaign, electric vehicle policy, ‘red light on Gaadi off campaign’ and many others. The Delhi government is the first state government to come up with a solution to stubble burning by using bio decomposer,” Rai said.

“The Delhi government has also moved the Supreme Court against around 10 thermal power plants in NCR which are the contributo­rs to this pollution,” he added.

“The Delhi government under the leadership of chief minister Arvind Kejriwal has helped us to bring down the air pollution by 25 per cent,” Rai said.
