Amidst the tension in Punjab Congress, general secretary in-charge Harish Rawat flew to Chandigarh to meet Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh.

The development comes after Captain Amarinder Singh had written to Congress president Sonia Gandhi against the proposed appointment of Navjot Singh Sidhu as the Punjab state unit chief. After the meeting, the Punjab chief minister was quoted by his media adviser as saying that he had a fruitful meeting with Mr Rawat.

“Had a fruitful meeting with @harishrawatcmuk. Reiterated that any decision of @INCIndia president will be acceptable to all. Raised certain issues which he said he’ll take up with @INCIndia president, @capt_amarinder,” the official tweeted.

On returning to Delhi after meeting the Punjab chief minister, the AICC general secretary expressed happiness that “several matters which were being discussed outside” have turned out to be worthless after talking to the chief minister.

“Captain saab has repeated his stand that he will accept and respect whatever decision the Congress president takes in the matter of the Punjab Congress chief ’s position,” Mr Rawat tweeted in Hindi, thanking the chief minister for this.

Insiders claim Captain Amarinder Singh had pointed out that two Jat Sikhs cannot be leading the party and the state unit chief needs to be from the Hindu community.

Meanwhile Mr. Sidhu went on a charm offensive in Chandigarh. He met the incumbent state unit chief Mr Jakhar and several MLAs earlier in the day amid speculation over his appointment as the next head of the party's state unit. After the meeting with Mr Jakhar, which lasted more than half-an-hour, Mr Sidhu said he is his elder brother and a guiding force.
