Significant drop in ceasefire violations this year, says Army

- AGE CORRESPONDENT NEW DELHI, AUG. 3

In a clear indication that the Indian security forces have managed to successfully keep the activities of the Pakistan forces along the border under check, latest figures reveal a significant drop in the incidents of ceasefire violations this year.

Till June this year, only 664 such ceasefire violations have been reported as compared to 2,470 in the same period last year and 5,133 in the entire 2020. Top security sources said one of the biggest reasons for the sharp drop in ceasefire violations has been due to the fact that now the Indian security forces are also retaliating promptly and “hitting Pakistan’s targets hard.”

Security sources said one of the main reasons for the sharp increase in ceasefire violations by Pakistan last year was that it wanted to take advantage of the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.

Pakistani agencies wanted to foment more trouble in the Kashmir Valley and hence were sending in more militants by providing them cover fire.

there was a direct link between firing by Pakistani forces and sending in more militants. Thus, there were 5,133 incidents of firing by the Pakistani forces. But our security forces also retaliated and hence most infiltration attempts by the security forces failed,” a senior security official remarked.

Sources also claimed that in the last more than one year since Article 370 was abolished in J&K, a new security pattern has also been put in place along the Indo-Pak border which is now yielding dividends.

A three-tier security cordon has now been put in place all along the Indo-Pak border by the Army, BSF, and the local police. Due to this, infiltration attempts have dropped suddenly and even incidents of firing or heavy shelling by Pakistan have registered a sharp record.
