‘Satyameva Jayate’, says Cong as Twitter unlocks Rahul’s, party accounts

-

New Delhi, Aug. 14: Twitter Saturday restored the account of Rahul Gandhi, alongside those of the Congress and its other leaders, amid ongoing friction between the social media platform and the party over its members sharing pictures of the family of an alleged rape victim.

“Satyameva Jayate (truth alone triumphs)”, the Congress tweeted in its first reaction after its official handle was unlocked.

Mr Gandhi’s and the Congress’ accounts were temporarily suspended last week after he tweeted pictures of the family of the nine-year-old victim of alleged rape and murder in Northwest Delhi. Twitter deemed it a violation of its rules.

Twitter on its part said it restored Mr Gandhi’s account after the Congress leader submitted a consent letter from the family of the girl for use of images but continues to withhold the tweets that contain the images saying they violate India’s laws.

Sources said the Twitter accounts of some of the party leaders who had shared the same pictures have also been restored.

“Rahul Gandhi’s Twitter account has been unlocked,” a party functionary said.

Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said the Modi government will make every effort to shut the voice forever of all those who speak for the country's daughters, the underprivileged and the youth.

“We are not worried, we will continue to raise our voice against injustice, lies, oppression and tyranny. We have been sacrificing for the democracy of India and will continue to do so,” he said in a tweet in Hindi.
