How to apply make-up when it’s excessive sweating

There’s nothing fun about showing up at a party or a friend’s house with melted make-up

Richarda Zill, an expert at the German Cosmetic, Toiletry and Detergent Association, has a few tips for making make-up last.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE EYES

Instead of emphasising your mouth, which might be covered by a mask anyway, you should instead focus on your eyes, according to Zill.

Waterproof products are essential if you want to apply eye shadow, mascara and eyebrow pencil in the heat — they won’t run, even in high temperatures, or when you sweat.

However, any care products you use on your skin or eyes need to have enough time to be absorbed before applying make-up. No greasy film should remain on the skin, says Zill. “Oils and fats can dissolve waterproof ingredients and lead to raccoon eyes.”

LAYING A STRONG FOUNDATION

Zill recommends using a primer before applying foundation, whether in liquid, cream or powder form, on hot days. Doing so will make the make-up on top last longer.

According to Zill, moisturising additives, such as aloe vera, have proven to be effective when the weather’s hot. To make the result last, she advises finishing with some setting spray.

It’s also important to protect your face from the sun: Either you can use a day cream with a sun protection factor, or apply a sun cream under make-up — which needs time to set in before doing your make-up.

If your skin turns a darker shade in the sun, powdery make-up or make-up with too much coverage should be avoided, as they can make skin look dry and mask-like, according to Zill.
