Heavy rains lash parts of Mumbai, cause landslides
HEAVY RAINS led to a landslide in Asalpha locality of Ghatkopar and a rockslide in Malad’s Kurar village injuring some people
After a gap of nearly two weeks, heavy rains returned to Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra on Tuesday. The southwest monsoon, which has become active in the state, is likely to bring more heavy showers across Maharashtra in the next couple of days.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the low-pressure system that formed over the Bay of Bengal last weekend has since moved inland. Under the influence of this system, widespread rainfall with isolated heavy falls are likely to lash Maharashtra’s central parts, Vidarbha, Konkan and Goa subdivisions on Wednesday.
“Due to a low-pressure area over western parts of Vidarbha, rainfall activity over Mumbai and its suburbs would continue during next 24 hours leading to moderate rain at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall (less than 15cm) at isolated places,” IMD said in its tweet. It has also cautioned fishermen against venturing into the Arabian Sea at least for the next 72 hours till September 3 due to rough sea conditions.
Rains lashed several parts of Mumbai on Tuesday providing relief to people from the humidity. Several lowlying areas were also inundated following heavy overnight showers. Since Monday night, the metropolis, neighbouring Navi Mumbai, Thane and other adjoining areas received rainfall in the range of 20 mm to 70 mm.
The suburbs of Mumbai recorded 49 mm rain while the inland city received 29.8 mm rain in the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on Tuesday. Heavy rains led to a landslide in Asalpha locality of Ghatkopar and a rockslide in Malad’s Kurar village injuring some people.
