Sangma: Decision to join Trinamul is a ‘trendsetter’

‘TMC flags will flutter across Meghalaya’

- RAJIB CHOWDHURI KOLKATA, NOV. 30

Former Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma, on Tuesday, described his defection from the Congress to the Trinamul Congress along with 11 MLAs as a “trendsetter” that would inspire many others to follow his footsteps in the Northeast soon.

He also hailed TMC supremo and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee as the sole challenger to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha election.

Mr Sangma, accompanied by 11 other MLAs of Meghalaya, was speaking to the media in the presence of senior TMC leaders Partha Chatterjee and Subrata Bakshi in Kolkata.

Mr Sangma said, “We decided to join TMC based on the palpable feelings of hundreds of thousands of Congress workers and those who are aligned with the ideology and principle of this party across Meghalaya, the Northeast, and the country. They are anxious because there was no real hope and wanted an alternative. What we have decided is definitely a trendsetter for what is going to happen across the NE and the country.”

He added, “You will now see the same trend in a number of states because the collective desire of the people is what we are. We are only responding to the collective desire of the people and in the interest of this great nation. Meghalaya has been the most favourite destination for the people of Kolkata and West Bengal while Kolkata has been the second home for the people of Meghalaya.”

“In the next 30-45 days, the whole of Meghalaya will have TMC flags. In the next few months, we will set up an organisational framework of TMC across Meghalaya,” he said.

The newly inducted TMC leader observed, “People across the country want a strong political force to counter the BJP. More and more people will join the movement under the leadership of Ms Banerjee. Her leadership style has made us believe that political dynamics will shift in the coming days.”
