Rahul blames home ministry for Nagaland civilians’ deaths

Continuing his attack on the central government Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday slammed the government over the killings of civilians during an anti-insurgency operation in the Mon district of Nagaland. He demanded that the GOI must give a “real reply”. “This is heart-wrenching,” Rahul Gandhi wrote on Twitter, “What exactly is the home ministry doing when neither civilians nor security personnel is safe in our own land?”

Police in Nagaland said at least 11 civilians were killed by security forces and that it is investigat­ing whether the incident was a case of mistaken identity. The Army on Sunday ordered a Court of Inquiry into the killing of civilians and expressed deep regret over the incident. Army officials said the operation in Mon district that borders Myanmar was carried out based on credible intelligen­ce inputs about the likely movement of insurgents in the area. It was reported that some security personnel also received some injuries in the skirmish post the incident.

In the last couple of days the center has come in for criticism on several issues by the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. As the winter session of parliament is currently in progress the issue is likely to be raised there also. The winter session is creating a lot of political heat with several issues that are being raised by the opposition parties have cornered the government. Recently Mr. Rahul Gandhi lashed out at the central government for stating that it had no data on farmer deaths during the last one year of the farmer agitation demanding repeal of three farm laws when asked about compensati­on.

The first week of the winter session has been stormy with 12 members of the upper house being suspended for the entire session . Very little business has been transacted it remains to be seen how the fourteen more sittings in
