Sex and Sleep Deprivation

Getting adequate rest before making love is the key to a good sex life

- DR D. NARAYANA REDDY

Arun wondered why his sex life was deteriorating. While he could keep awake late into the night to complete his work schedule, he was falling asleep when his wife expected him to make love to her.

At a time when men fall asleep before attempting sex or after sex, there’s a new breed of men who are falling asleep even while having sex!

Ask them why, and pat comes the reply — tired!

The IT sector, call centres, BPOs and MNCs have bred these sleepy lovers!

Chronic over-scheduling, overwork, stress, frequent traveling, the pressure to meet targets and deadlines etc. have become an intrinsic part of urban life. And we have allowed it to dribble on to our personal lives too. One makes appointments to meet one’s own wife. And when appointments have to be rescheduled, it is often sex that’s left behind.

Fatigue and stress do inhibit desire and arousal. Physical exhaustion alone cannot be blamed here, mental exhaustion is equally treacherous. Exhaustion is not gender-dependent, but it is often the man who is targeted, as he is the one who has to rise to the occasion and not the woman. Work demands cut into sleep hours. Deprivation of sleep is a killer of sex life.

Researchers at the University of Chicago have found that “Men with poor sleep patterns (less than five hours) have significantly lower levels of Testosterone.”

Testosterone (Male Sex Hormone) not only reduces the sex drive but also the energy levels, sense of well-being and mood. All these also contribute to poor sexual performance.
