Ulfa ‘executes’ 2 cadre for allegedly spying for police

- MANOJ ANAND

The outlawed United Liberation Front of AsomIndependent (Ulfa-I) chief Paresh Baruah on Saturday appeared on local television and announced that two of its cadres have been given capital punishment on the charges of spying for the Assam police. In the same telephonic interview, he claimed that the capital punishment pronounced by the outfit has already been executed on Saturday morning.

The publicity wing of the outfit also issued a statement stating that two youngsters, Dhanjit Das of Barpeta and Sanjib Sarma of Baihata Chairali, were given ‘death sentence’ after they were found guilty by the outfit’s lower judicial council on May 4 and May 5 respectively.

“Since the crime committed by both cadres are unpardonable, as per the decision of the lower judicial council they were given undesired death today on May 7,” said the statement issued by the self-styled brigadier A.Z. Shironam Asom.

The statement further said that Mr Das and Mr Sarma were planted by the police to extract information about the outfit. Mr Das, the outfit alleged, had tried to flee the outfit’s camp on April 24 but was apprehended the next day. On interrogation, he allegedly admitted that he had been persuading other cadres to surrender and supplying information about the well-wishers and supporters of the outfit to the police.

The publicity wing of the outfit further claimed that Mr Sarma was paid by the police to infiltrate the outfit as a “spy” and had “advanced communication devices” with him to relay information back.

According to the security agencies’ estimates, this year at least 234 persons have left their homes and families to join the outfit. A few sportspersons and a Youth Congress leader are among those believed to have joined the outfit in the recent months.

Since the new Bharatiya Janata Partyled alliance government led by chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took charge in Assam in May last year, there have been indications both from the government and the outfit that they could sit for peace talks. The Ulfa-I had announced a unilateral ceasefire in May 2021 which is being extended.
