‘Music is diversifying’

Singer Shaan talks about working for the Telugu film, Music School

-

When Shaan recorded a breezy number in the upcoming bilingual Telugu-Tamil, Music School, last year, little did he know what was in store for him.

The film’s director Paparao Biyyala saw that Shaan was enjoying recording the sixminute number very much, and it prompted him to cast him in the film.

“When Papa Rao Sir asked me to be part of the film, I was taken aback, says the singer, adding that the director felt his personality suited that of a spunky character. “Papa Rao Biyyala was looking for a flamboyant person for this role and he thought I fit the bill,” he explains. However, the character was a professional dancer. “I said I don’t know dance, but we rehearsed extensively four days before shooting the song. I felt confident and gave it my everything,” the singer adds.

Shaan plays a Goan musician who moves to Mumbai. The drama that unfolds after that is interestingly narrated.

“Language (Telugu) was not a problem. Since I play a Goan musician, my dialogues are in English,” he says.

As a musician and someone who has been in the industry for over 25 years, we ask Shaan how music in the country is evolving. He replies that contemporary music is coming from various parts of India, unlike earlier. “Today’s tunes have all kinds of music and different kinds of musicians are getting a lot of appreciation. Music has become diverse,” he says. Possibilities have opened up for performers, and the

orchestration is mirroring various cultures. Shaan believes that you need not be a musician anymore to compose music! When asked about the learnings from his journey, the singer actor says, “Just enjoy the art and the process. But don’t take things too personally.” —
