‘Honey-trapped’, Indian Air Force jawan arrested for espionage

- AGE CORRESPONDENT NEW DELHI, MAY 12

The crime branch of Delhi police, on Thursday, arrested an Air Force sergeant for leaking sensitive information about defence installations and personnel to the female agent of an adversary country in lieu of money.

The accused, Devendra Kumar Sharma, used to leak the information through electronic means after deceitfully obtaining it from the computers and other files. He also received money, from the agent of an adversary country, for the leaked information, the police said.

The arrest was made based on a complaint received from the Indian Air Force authorities alleging therein that Sharma had leaked the sensitive information about defence installations and Air Force personnel through electronic means to the agent of an adversary country.

According to crime branch sources, Sharma was first honey-trapped by a woman and then requested to give IAF sensitive knowledge.

They went on to say that Sharma was arrested on May 6 and that the police has been investigating the case since then and has discovered the conspiracy.

During the investigation, it was also discovered that his wife’s bank account had some unusual activity.

Meanwhile, the role of Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the ISI, is being investigated, according to sources.

It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time ISI handlers have used a defence employee as a honeypot. Pakistani intelligence agencies are always trying to corner India and obtain vital information about the Indian security system through honey-trapping young people.
