C’garh tribals make 11 km-long scarf, sets ‘world record’

- RABINDRA NATH CHOUDHURY RAIPUR, MAY 22

Around 300 tribal women employed in the Chhattisgarh government-run garment-making factory DANNEX in the South Bastar district of Dantewada in the state have made an 11 km-long chunri (scarf) for local presiding deity Maa Danteswari to set a world record.

A roadshow carrying the 11 km-long chunri was organised in the district headquarters of Dantewada on Sunday.

The roadshow was led by ruling Congress MLA of Dantewada Devti Karma, the widow of Mahendra Karma—the founder of the anti-Naxal civil vigilante force, Salwa Judum.

Mahendra Karma was among the 27 Congress leaders of Chhattisgarh who were massacred by Maoists at Jeeram Ghati in Bastar district on May 25, 2013.

It took a week for the female tribal employees of the garment-making unit to make the chunri, official sources said.

“The female employees of DANNEX have made the 11 km-long chunri. A roadshow carrying the scarf was organised in the city on Sunday. The chunri will be presented to Maa Danteswari by chief minister Bhupesh Baghel on Monday,” Dantewada district subdivisional magistrate Avinash Mishra told this newspaper.

According to him, a team from the Golden Book of Records was present on the occasion. The 11 km-long chunri has set a world record.

The Golden Book of Records will certify it formally on Monday after the scarf has been presented to the deity, he added.

The chunri has broken the record of the 8,000 meter-long scarf, presented to the Narmada deity in the district headquarters of Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh around four years ago, as the longest chunri in the world.
