Cadaver lab also in the pipeline

- STAFF REPORTER

Along with setting up of ROTTO Centre, Parel-based KEM Hospital will also start a cadaver laboratory for which a proposal has also been sent. However, the hospital is still waiting for funds for the start-up of the laboratory which they are supposed to get from the Central government. The hospital sources stated that the setting up of the laboratory will be delayed if they do not get the funds in time.

The objective of starting up a cadaver laboratory is to train students in studying human anatomy and carrying out transplantations. Sujata Patwardhan, general secretary of Zonal Transplant and Coordination Centres said, “The laboratory will probably start in a year’s time and the basic idea is to ensure that the medical students are trained and taught about how cadaver donation and transplantations are conducted. In order to perform transplantation, they should have the knowledge of how an organ is retrieved and transplanted in a human body.”

However, there seems to be stumbling blocks in the setting up of cadaver laboratory wherein they are have not received any funds yet. When asked, Dr Avinash Supe, dean of KEM Hospital said, “Funds of Rs 5 crore have been allotted as ROTTO funds and setting up of cadaver laboratory also is included in this, however, we are still waiting for these funds and only after we receive, we can start the work on the laboratory.

The laboratory will train students and fresh cadaver samples will be stored in special coolers to ensure that they are safe for usage for transplantation. But we are helpless if we do not receive the funds because it will only delay the work and the patients will suffer.”
