Centenary celebrations for CR’s Matunga Carriage Workshop
The Matunga Carriage Workshop of the Central Railway celebrated its centenary on Thursday with the presence of Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu. The carriage repair workshop was built 1915 near Matunga railway station for repair workshop for broad gauge and narrow gauge coaches and wagons of the erstwhile Great Indian Peninsular (GIP) Railway.
The workshop covers a tri- angular piece of land/area of 35 hectares, including a covered area of about 11 hectares, skirted by the Central Railway suburban corridors on the east and the Western Railway corridors on the west.
The workshop now carries out Periodical Overhaul (POH) that is maintenances, needed repairs of the Indian Railway coaches and heavy corrosion repairs of main line as well as Electrical Multiple Unit (EMU) coaches.
The workshop carries a great history with it and is the first zonal workshop celebrating 100 years of glorious service. It also holds many firsts in its list in competition with other zonal central railway workshops like Parel and Kurduwadi.
The first fully Air conditioned Rail Ambulance of Indian Railways is designed and turned out in May 2015 by the Matunga Workshop for transporting injured passengers from accident site. It is equipped with state of the art facilities like operation theatre, ECG machine and can accommodate 22 patients.
Recently Matunga workshop has designed ‘Green Toilet’, in line with ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’. These coaches are provided with twelve toilets, four bathrooms and two urinals.
