Expect some good air quality this weekend

- STAFF REPORTER

On Friday, the city recorded its lowest air quality index wherein it touched 90 which falls in the good category. This is the second time in the week that the city has reported such good air quality levels wherein the AQI for Monday was 89.

The System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) stated that high flow of winds along with high temperatures is playing a major role in the city’s good air quality. “When the wind patterns and flow is high, we witness that the chemicals and toxins which are in the atmosphere get washed away and we only witness a pollution-free environment,” said Gufran Beig, project director of SAFAR.

Further, SAFAR researchers predict good air quality levels for the weekend. Of all the 10 locations monitored by SAFAR, only BKC reported poor air quality index as 273 for Friday. When a city reports poor air quality levels, then it is stated that the people are at a risk of developing breathing problems and lung infections.

City health experts have stated that environmental pollutions have a huge impact on people’s health especially on those who belong to the high-risk group including people with co-morbidities, pregnant women and elderly. “With recent fires which emitted huge smoke and poor pollution levels, people’s health were adversely affected especially in areas of Deonar, Chembur, Vasai and Navi Mumbai. We have not reported much cases of breathing or any other infection in the past week as the air quality was good and people didn’t face any health difficulties,” said a civic official from health department.
