Sector overview

Think about it. Today, people are taking more videos than watching stuff live. Anyone with a even a remotely advanced phone (and, of course, everyone with a smart phone) is able to shoot videos, and use them in any manner they like. These can be edited easily, and even stitched together easily to make a reel. In fact, social media users don’t even pause for a second before forwarding the videos they receive, they eagerly share it with their contacts.

When we look in the reverse, we can actually realise the effort that has gone into creating a particular video from scratch, and then cutting it to provide the ultimate viewer experience. And these are the people who decide who will finally decide what stays and what will be snipped off in a particular video. Be it a short film, a dance, or a live performance, an animated film or anything else, it is the video editors who are at the helm of things to make the essential decisions. Even though the industry is large and growing, organisations are in need of newcomers, those who have an eye for videos and those who know the ropes of the latest editing software programmes. There are ample employment opportunities in the large production houses, as well as independent production companies, television channels, digital media organisations etc.

Many who work in this field say that at least the next decade is going to be suitable for anyone who enters this profession to do well and build a career. Since the digital medium is only going to expand, there will be opportunities to try new things. The work environment may keep you on your toes, but will also lead you to more opportunities. It is meant for those who are not afraid of investing their time in keeping up with the software.
