Bhujbal back in jail as doc faces suspension
The Arthur Road jail medical officer, Dr Rahul Ghule who is facing an investigation for his role in admitting NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal to a hospital, has been suspended from duty on Monday. Meanwhile, Bhujbal was discharged from the hospital and has been sent back to Arthur Road Jail.
Bhujbal had been admitted to St. George’s Hospital after he was referred by Dr Ghule for a medical opinion. However, the issue led to a controversy when it was revealed that Bhujbal had in fact been only sent for a dental check up, and it was Dr Ghule who manipulated the records and got him referred to the hospital. Following this, the jail department had said that Dr Ghule was guilty of fudging the papers and had sent him back to the parent department for further action.
When asked about the case, B K Singh, special inspector general of prisons, said that Bhujbal was discharged on Monday after completing all his treatment requirements, including the dental problem. “However, the inquiry into how he was sent to the hospital when he only needed dental treatment is still being investigated,” he added.
Sources said that the inquiry committee that had been set up by JJ Hospital regarding the admission of Bhujbal has said that he was suffering from several conditions and hence needed to be admitted to the hospital. “We have seen the medical papers of Bhujbal at St. George’s Hospital and it says that he was diagnosed with acute myocardial ischaemia, allergic bronchial asthma along with dental abscess,” a senior official said. Following this, doctors at the hospital had advised that he should be admitted to the intensive care unit for monitoring and evaluation of respiratory and cardiac status.
Meanwhile, another under trial , Chandra Shekhar, who had been admitted to Rajawadi Hospital at Ghatkopar for the last four months has been discharged today and his back in Arthur Road Jail. He had been arrested in a case of cheating and had been referred for medical treatment and was sent to Rajawadi Hospital. Though he was initially unwilling to be discharged, a team of policemen and jail officials reached the hospital and prevailed upon him to the discharged. Singh confirmed that that Chandra Shekhar is back in Arthur Road and is now like any other prisoner.
