Kanani visited US to collect database, suspect police

-

The Thane crime branch sleuths, who are probing the multi-crore fake call centre case, suspect that the accused Jagdish Kanani, an aide of the mastermind Sagar Thakkar had made frequent trips to the USA to collect database of the conned victims.

According to Parag Manare, Deputy Commissioner of Police (crime), Thane, “The accused Jagdish Kanani had visited USA four times since December 2012. We suspect that Kanani travelled to the USA to collect database of the US citizens, who have been conned by him.”

Kanani, apart from owning two call centres in Mumbai, had invested in one of the 12 call centres raided by police in partnership with an arrested accused Haider Ali. “During interrogation Kanani had told us that he has disposed off the computer hard disks at the call centres into the Vasai Creek. However, we do not believe him and we are cross-checking the facts,” said a police officer requesting anonymity.

Jagdish grew up in Chennai where his father is a businessman. He worked in a multinational Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) for some time before shifting to Ahmedabad.

Meanwhile, the police are also on the lookout for Sagar Thakkar alias Shaggy and his sister Reema who are said to be the masterminds of the scam. However, the police have not yet been able to trace Thakkar’s accomplices— Tapesh Gupta, Akhilesh Singh, Rahul Dogra and Jimmy. Police had swooped down on call centres in Mira Road.
