Limelight on farmers, please
With reference to ‘Succour for farmers in the land of diversity’ (Feb 18, FPJ), it is a fact that the farmers lag far behind the rest of the country in education, health, employment opportunities and even modern farming techniques even though they have a significant role to play as the backbone of the country in economic development. No one seems to be paying attention towards the farmers’ plight. The schemes introduced by the government for the benefit of the farmers don’t reach them. Mr. Jhunjhunwala has correctly stated about an ambitious research programme which must be undertaken by the government to produce high
value agriculture products and provide landbased subsidy as well as investment in irrigation, roads, schemes and loans because, these are the only true solutions to the problems of farmers.
