Nirupam offers to quit, new city Congress chief on cards

- SWAPNIL MISHRA

After the Congress party faced major electoral drubbing in the civic polls, Sanjay Nirupam the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) President tendered his resignation to his party high command in Delhi. Though his resignation has not been accepted officially, two names doing rounds are Bhai Jagtaap and Gurudas Kamat.

The dispute inside the party had led to grab only 31 seats out of 227 in Mumbai which is the worst performance by the Congress in this civic election. In 2012 Brihunmumbai Municipal Congress (BMC) elections, the Congress had won 52 seats and in 2007, it had emerged victorious on 75 seats in the Mumbai.

Sanjay Nirupam said, “The worst performance of the party is just because of the internal disputes and anti-party campaigns due to which such results have come out so badly.”

Nirupam said he has spoken to the party high command and offered to resign for the worst performance in the civic election. “I am taking all the responsibility as the party chairman and I have offered my resignation to the high command. Despite my resignation I will continue working for the party,” said Nirupam.

"I admit there was lack of resources in the last two years but one person cannot ensure the party success. There was also immense negativity spread by certain party leaders to harm the campaign," said Nirupam.

“The party high command had send observers to solve the party disputes and resolving the differences but the leaders who were targeting me refused to meet them also,” added Nirupam.

“I have been the city president for the last two years, but the same situation was seen during the time of Murli Deora and Kripashankar Singh. Are Deora and Singh wrong and is only one person correct?” Nirupam questioned without naming Kamat.

Nirupam said, “Some disciplinary action should be taken against the leaders who think they are bigger than the party otherwise Congress will keep suffering such worst performance.”
