RS 2.25 CRORE OLD NOTES SEIZED

MUMBAI: The Thane crime branch seized demonetise­d currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 with a total face value of Rs 2.25 crore. Cops have detained five persons.

The Thane crime branch unit-1 seized a total of Rs.2.25 crore cash of demonetize­d notes of Rs.500 and Rs.1000. The police have detained five persons and handed them over to the Income Tax department on Tuesday. They were allegedly transporti­ng the cash to exchange the new currency with the agents on commission basis.

The police had received a tip-off on February 25 that three persons were carrying demonetize­d cash near Chintamani jewellers at Jambhali naka at Thane (W). Demonetize­d notes worth Rs.46 lakhs was found inside their car (MH04-FR-3277). The detained persons are driver Dayashanka­r Trilok Yadav (28), Pankaj Sitaram Goyal (40) and Sunil Mutthuraj (29). Yadav and Goyal are garments businessme­n. Yadav is a resident of Abdul Karim chawl at Goregaon while Goyal is a resident of Vani nagar at Swami Vivekanand road at Malad. Mutthuraj is a resident of Mahavir view at Cama lane at Ghatkopar (W).

On February 27, the police received another tip off that an accused Chetan Sadhusingh Randhwa (36) was going to visit Golden bridge at Thane at 5:20 p.m. A team of officials intercepte­d Randhwa’s motorcycle (MH-03 CA-1722) and detained him. They were carrying Rs.50 lakhs in a sack bag.

On February 28, the police intercepte­d estate agents Kishor Gyaneshwar Dambre (25) and Vinod Navnath Shinde (42) at Tembhi naka at Thane (W). Rs.1.29 crore hidden in a gunny bag inside a car was seized from the duo. Dambre is a resident of Chaitanyan­agar chawl at Powai while Shinde is a resident of Nerul in Navi Mumbai.

According to Parag Manere, Deputy Commission­er of Police, Thane crime branch, “We have seized Rs.2.25 crore in demonetize­d notes of Rs.500 and Rs.1000. Five persons have been detained. They have been handed over to the Income Tax department for further inquiry.”

It is said that such agents who exchange old currency notes for new are still active.
