Hiten’s double whammy!

Men find it hard to live with one wife, here Hiten Tejwani is married to two... in a play

- –Mamta Sonar

We all know Hiten Tejwani from the Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi days. He has come a long way since, and his journey has been full of success and love. Audiences have loved him in every role, in every serial, and now the actor is back to theatre after a hiatus of 17 years. Here he talks about his second stage innings, and more...

Tell us about your play I Love You Two.

I love comedies. Firstly, I'm doing this play because it's hilarious. My character’s name is Kishen. He's a happy-go-lucky guy except for the fact that he has two wives. The play is being produced by Sanjay Jha.

How much do you relate to the character? (Laughs) No, I do not relate to that character. I agree with him only till the point that no matter whatever happens, wife is always right and here in Kishen's case wives are always right.

Also, I am back to theatre after almost 17 years. For this play I've been rehearsing for past one month. My last play was an English comedy, Oh no... Not Again. I was working on Gangaa serial but my track there is over, so now I'm only concentrating on this play.

You are working with Toral Rasputra for the second time post Balika Vadhu... Yes I'm working again with Toral; it's lovely working with her. In Balika Vadhu, my character was supposed to get married to her, here in this play we are already married. What difference do you find in theatre, TV and movies? Plays are live, we have the reactions right then and there, there's no retake and it's a wonderful exercise for an actor. In movies and TV you can do a retake.

Also in movies and serials, you have to live the character till the end – and that can take years! And to keep the freshness alive, I try to study my onscreen character. I try to figure out how this man would behave in such a situation. It helps me a lot as an actor.

You have the image of ideal husband on-screen... Yes as I said, I do believe that wife is always right and I always listen to my wife! (laughs)
