To lift the family from poverty was his dream

- VARSHA TORGALKAR

“Born and brought up in a poor family, Deepak Jagannath Ghadge, martyr Sepoy in Indian Army, had been trying to lift his family from that misery. He had been working on his dream to avail comforts and luxuries for his poor parents and to provide a good lifestyle for his wife and two kids. But at the age of 27, he got martyred, leaving behind his parents and family to fend for themselves,” said colonel R R Jadhav, uncle of Deepak Ghadge. Deepak’s parents and wife Nisha are too shocked to speak.

Deepak was killed in Pakistani’s discriminate and unprovoked firing along the LoC in Poonch district in Kashmir on March 9. He was a Sepoy in 15 Maratha Light Infantry. He is survived by parents, wife, and two kids. His last rites were performed on Saturday after his remains were carried to his village Borgoan in Satara.

R R Jadhav, maternal uncle of Deepak said, “His parents own a small piece of land in the drought affected Borgoan village in Satara district. Hence they had to often work as farm labourers in nearby villages to meet ends. Due to extreme poverty, they could not feed and educate their son Deepak and daughter Dipa. Both Deepak and his sister were sent to their maternal uncle R R Jadhav in Vadroshi village which is in Patan block of Satara district.”

“He was admitted in the government run school there and was an average student. On weekends or on holidays, he had to toil at farms to pay for his school or to help his family. It has been a tough life and somehow without tuitions, he completed school. But later he could not take admission for further education due to lack of money. For a few years, he worked as a labourer and toiled at his own farms at Borgoan.

He added, “His life changed for good when he got selected in Army eight years ago. He was extremely happy and had a dream to lift his family from poverty and of course to serve the country. He wanted to build a house as his parents used to stay in a room of tins all their lives. When he started to earn, the first thing he did was to build a three-room house for his parents. Fortunately, his sister Dipa also got selected for police constable post recently and the family has begun to live a comfortable life.”

He added, “He married Nisha five years ago. When their son Shabhuraj was born three and a half years ago, another dream of his was fulfilled. He has a year-old daughter, Pari, as well. As he could not go to a good school and get a higher education, he wanted his kids to study well in a good school. He had plans to admit them in an English medium school.”

He added, “Of course we will complete all his dreams but life without him would be tough.”
