Pune gets its first BJP Mayor
Bhartiya Janata Party’s Mukta Tilka has been elected as mayor of Pune on Wednesday. Tilak will be 56th mayor of Pune and will take over charge from Nationalist Congress Party’s Prashant Jagtap.
First time in the history of Pune, BJP candidate has been elected for the post of mayor. She will be the ninth woman mayor of the city.
BJP in the recently held elections for Pune Municipal Corporation won 98 seats getting clear mandate in 162 seats PMC, ending NCP’s dominance since 2007. The party had won only 26 seats in 2012 PMC elections.
After the procedural voting of the elected representatives for the Pune mayoral elections was completed, the BJP nominee Mukta Tilak was declared the next mayor with 98 votes defeating NCP candidate Nanda Lonkar who received 52 votes. The Shiv Sena’s ten corporators, meanwhile, remained absent from voting while the two corporators of MNS abstained from voting. MIM’s lone corporator voted for NCP candidate Nanda Lonkar. Pune Mayor’s post is reserved for woman candidate.
Navnath Kambale of Republican Party of India has been elected the deputy mayor. He received 98 votes of all BJP-RPI corporators and defeated Lata Rajguru of Congress by 46 votes. The post of deputy mayor is reserved for SC and ST.
She said, “To make Pune smart city is my dream. Besides I will work to avail public transport, cheap homes, development of the city and issues that are dear to people in Pune.”
