Drop in train accident deaths: Eco Survey

- SWEETY ADIMULAM

Going contrary to the trend of ever increasing deaths due to train accidents in the Mumbai city, the Economic Survey has revealed that there has been a substantial decrease in the number of such deaths.

The report states that around 1,798 commuters lost their lives while crossing (trespassing) railway tracks in the year 2016 which is comparatively less than the last year 2015 that recorded 1,801 deaths.

The crowded compartment is another major reason for the increased death and accidents in the Mumbai local train.

However, the report states that in the year 2015 people lost lives by falling down from the crowded train 806 which has decreased to 657 in the year 2016.

Another important reason for the deaths in the railway is the gap between the platform and the footboard, as per the survey report around 13 people died which was 40 in the year 2015.

The rising number of accidents in Mumbai local trains the railway ministry has decided to phase out additional railway tracks to decongest the traffic of local train and eventually to increase the frequency of locals benefiting the commuters.

For Mumbaikars additional railway tracks are being planned out between kurla-Chatarapati Shivaji Maharaj station (CST), Mumbai Central and Borivali, Thane-Diva, Andheri- Goregoan. Wherein the economic survey report states that the work for the additional tracks has been completed by 75 percent.
