Police station in Trombay attacked, vans vandalised

A mob allegedly set a police van on fire, damaged two police vehicles and vandalised Trombay police station on Saturday night.

The accused Arvind Chinwa (20) had put up an objectiona­ble morphed picture of a religious structure on Facebook after which a group of men from Trombay protested and complained about it to police at 10:30 p.m. on Saturday. They also pelted stones at two other police vehicles and the police station causing damage to the window panes. Subsequent­ly, another mob of twenty people came to the police station and demanded that Chinwa be handed over to them. The mob set a police van on fire and damaged two more vans. Police officials were also hurt during the incident. 100 armed personnel were deployed in and around Trombay which is near Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) headquarte­rs. The fire brigade officials were immediatel­y alerted. Two jumbo tankers and three tenders which then doused the burning jeep.

Additional commission­er of police Manoj Lohiya (east region) said, “Immediatel­y after we received the informatio­n, Chinwa was arrested under the Informatio­n Technology Act. Based on the CCTV footage, the miscreants were arrested.”

The State Reserve Police Force was summoned to take control of the situation. Deven Bharti, the Joint Commission­er of police (Law and Order) and Additional Commission­er of Police Lohiya rushed to the spot immediatel­y.

to murder, rioting, armed with deadly weapon, assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty and voluntaril­y causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty of the Indian Penal Code and for mischief causing damage under the Damage to Public Property Act. The accused including Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (MIM) Corporator Shahnawaz Khan have been remanded to police custody until March 24 by the Bhoiwada holiday court.
