11 lakh names missing, but 63 complaints

A month after around 11 lakh voters were unable to vote in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections, a mere 63 written complaints were filed with the civic body’s election department. A Right To Information (RTI) application filed by activist Anil Galgali revealed that 63 written complaints were filed for missing names in the voters list.

Galgali said, “The number of complaints shows the negative attitude of voters and shows that the city voters are least interested for their voting rights.”

It was reported that many voters who were voting since several years were unable to find their names in the voter list of the recent elections. The recent civic election witnessed an improved voter turnout of 55 percent. Over 50 lakh out of the 92 lakh voters participated in the elections to elect 227 councillors among 2,275 candidates.

In BMC polls held in 2012 and 2017, the number of voters was 1.02 crore and 91.80 lakh , respectively. In comparison to 2012, the number of voters was short of 11.06 lakh voters less this time.
