Seeds fall on the day of upsets

MUMBAI: Maharashtr­a’s third seed Dhruv Sunish, fifth seed Armaan Bhatia and seventh seed Kunal Vazirani, and No. 4 Hardeep Singh Sandhu of Punjab crashed on a dramatic day of upsets, in the 3.5 lakh MSLTA-IOC Khar Gymkhana All India Ranking Men’s tennis tournament on Tuesday. Qualifier Chandril Sood of Uttar Pradesh started the ball rolling after capitalizi­ng on a crucial break in the 11th game of the opening set to shock Sandhu 7-5, 6-2 in the first round. Sood later team up with his brother Lakshit to advance to the doubles

second round. In other opening round singles ties, unseeded Rohan Bhatia upset compatriot Vazirani 64, 6-4, while unseeded Abhinansu Borthakur of West Bengal halted Sunish with a 0-6, 7-6, 6-0 win. Unseeded Shaikh Abdullah of Telangana completed a rewarding day for the underdogs when he overcame Bhatia of Khar Gymkhana 6-3, 6-2.
