Shah panel trashes graft charges against Gujarat govt under Modi

- R K MISRA

The inquiry report of the Justice M B Shah Commission, set up to probe allegations of corruption against the Narendra Modi government in Gujarat was tabled in the state Assembly on Friday, four years after its submission.

Tabling the 5500 page, 22 volume report deputy chief minister Nitin Patel said that the report has found no credible evidence of any wrong-doing by the erstwhile Narendra Modi government as was being alleged by the Congress opposition.

Congress leader Shaktisinh Gohil, was however critical of the delay in placing the report on the table of the House.

“The report should have been tabled immediately after it was submitted instead of sitting over it for five years. I have reasons to believe that this was done with some motive in mind,” he said.

“The report has not given a clean chit as this government is at pains to state but instead pointed out the technicalities,” he added.

The Congress had in 2011 submitted a charter of allegations against the Narendra Modi government to the president of India.

The 1000 page charter enlisted numerous allegations. Thereafter Modi himself set up a judicial inquiry headed by retired Supreme Court judge, M B Shah to probe 14 issues highlighted by the Congress opposition.

The issues under probe included allocation of land to several corporate including Essar,Adani,RIL and L&T.
