In the government sector, Sir Jamshedji Jeejeebhoy hospital is the only staterun hospital which offers Lasik eye surgeries in Mumbai.

Dr Shashi Kapoor is the only surgeon who has been doing such surgeries in the hospital for past six years. He handles more than 100 patients a month.

Dr Kapoor was the first surgeon to get a Lasik surgery machine at Rs 2.5 crore in 1991 at his own eye clinic.

There are three Lasik eye surgery machines at All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, PGIMER, Chandigarh and JJ Hospital, Mumbai.

Dr Kapoor said, “JJ Hospital is the only governmentrun hospital in Maharashtra to get a LASIK eye surgery machine at Rs 3 crore in 2011.”

Almost 50% of the world population is myopic, which means the person cannot see things from a distance; this surgery comes as an advantage for them.

“More than 20% patients come to me for surgery just because they do not want to wear spectacles.”

Abdul Mutalib, who got his surgery done 12 years ago, is now working with Emirates Airlines.

“I am thankful to Dr Kapoor. Because of him I am now working with the airlines company where a person should have proper eyesight.

“He told me about the Lasik eye surgery which helped me. Now I do not have to wear spectacles,” said Mutalib.

Those with a BPL and an orange ration card can get the operation done for free while others have to pay Rs 10,000.

At private hospitals it costs about Rs 50,000-60,000. Each eye takes just five minutes to operate and the patient can return immediately after the operation.

The patient can leave the clinic without glasses, only some post-operative precautions like wearing glasses and applying eye drops for about three weeks are needed.

The patient who undergoes a Lasik surgery needs to take simple precautions like wearing glasses and applying eye drops for about three weeks.
