Bansode’s journey from poverty to civic auditing

- SAGAR PILLAI

From studying in a municipal school to studying scams in the municipal corporation, Suresh Bansode, Municipal Chief Auditor of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corpration, has come a long way. Born in a financially backward family, Bansode says that his vulnerable circumstances inspired him to fight the odds and accomplish his goals.

Bansode who is currently in the middle of completing the final audit report of the BMC has previously served as the chief auditor of two different municipal corporations (Ulhasnagar and Mira-Bhayandar). Sharing a life changing experience, Bansode said that he was once not allowed for a national level scholarship exam because he was from a civic school.

“While in the 10th grade, I was asked not to appear for the National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) as I was from a municipal school. However, after much protest I was allowed to appear for the exam. Surprisingly, out of our entire batch, I was the only one who had cleared the exam,” said Bansode who then went on to clear the MPSC exam after completing his graduation in civil engineering.

Speaking about the lack of facilities at civic schools these days, Bansode said that all municipal school requires an immediate upgrade. He added, “The civic schools need an infrastructural revamp as well as it needs to appoint the best teaching faculty.”

Eyeing on the expenditure of the civic body, Bansode says that strict action will be taken against each and every offender. “The taxpayer’s hard earned money should be utilised appropriately and more importantly for their benefit. Being from a middle class family, I accurately understand the deprivation of basic facilities. I will make sure that the culprits behind the scams of the civic body are not spared,” said the chief auditor.
