- DIWAKAR SHARMA Mumbai

A 22-year-old girl has lodged a complaint with the cyber cell of Mumbai Crime Branch at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) against a 30-year-old man (name withheld), who is said to have stolen her personal photographs and uploaded the same by creating her fake multiple profiles on the social networking site Facebook.

The victim, a resident of Bhandup, told the Free Press Journal that the accused is the son of a senior officer of Mumbai Police, who is posted at the Commissioner of Police (CP) office. “He always says that no police officer will take any action against him as his father is a senior police officer posted at the CP office,” said the victim, who has been visiting the cyber cell with her cousin since April 1.

The victim and the accused became friends on Facebook two years ago. They exchanged their numbers and began chatting over various platforms. Gradually they started dating each other and finally they decided to get married. However, once day the girl learnt that he was already seeing another girl at the same time. “This prompted me to cancel my decision to marry him. Still we continued meeting each other as friends,” she said.

The victim told the Free Press Journal that one day the accused, who claims to be an engineer by profession, took her mobile phone and transferred her personal photographs on his cell phone through the ‘share it’ application. She learnt he had misused these very photographs against her. “I learnt of this development only after it was brou- ght to my notice by some friends and relatives that he had begun sending them friend requests ,” said the victim.

The links to her all the fake profiles, created by the man, have been given to the cyber cell of Mumbai Crime Branch. “We have been continuously visiting the cyber cell and investigators keep telling me they have written to the Facebook officials and their response is awaited,” she added.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Cyber Cell) Akhilesh Singh told the Free Press Journal he was unaware of the case and said the victim can contact him. The victim has also submitted her complaint at Bhadup police station. “They (Bhandup police) have not registered FIR and asked us not to malign anyone,” said the victim.
