Sonu Nigam goes bald to make his bold ‘aazan’ point
Singer Sonu Nigam on Wednesday shaved his head, hours after offering to apologize if his tweets on azaan blared from loudspeakers were seen to be anti-Muslim. After the tweets sparked a row, a cleric in West Bengal, Syed Shah Atif Ali Al-Qaderi, announced he would give Rs 10 lakh to anyone who shaves off Sonu Nigam's head and garlands him with slippers.
On Wednesday, Sonu Nigam appeared before reporters bald, saying he had got Muslim celebrity hairstylist Aalim Khan to do the job.
Sonu Nigam clarified that he was a secular person and his statements were not meant against any religion. “I am a believer, not an atheist… Loud-speakers are not a necessity and they are not a part of any religion,” he said.
Clarifying that he was not against any particular religious group, Sonu Nigam said, “I have considered Mohammed Rafi as my guru. My driver is a Muslim. I am not antiMuslim, I consider myself secular.”
Nigam said that being secular doesn’t mean one should accept all things as they are. The singer quoted Congress leader Ahmed Patel: “Aazan is important, not loudspeaker.”
